If you’re a fan of the Netflix K-drama TV series Squid Game, it’s time to celebrate! Netflix recently announced the second season of Squid Game, the most successful and one of the best TV series available on the platform. The announcement came through the official Netflix social channels, which aroused the interest of fans around the world. Initially, screenwriter-director Hwang Dong-hyuk mentioned the development of the series. He wasn’t sure it would work though, as most of K’s dramas end in one season. Fortunately, this record-breaking series was loved by fans and was motivating enough for Netflix to officially ignite the Squid game in season two.
However, we still have limited knowledge of how the show progressed after last season’s Cliff ending. That’s why we’ve created this detailed guide to answer all your burning questions. So let’s see what to expect from the second season of Squid Game, including a returning cast, story ideas, release date and more.
Squids Season 2: Everything You Need to Know (June 2022)
Spoiler Warning : The post features heavy spoilers for Squid Season 1, so proceed as you see fit.
The release date for the second season of Squid
In an interview with Vanity Fair, director Hwang mentioned that viewers can expect the launch of the second season of Squid in late 2023 or early 2024 . During the interview, Hwang revealed that he only wrote three pages of the script and was unsure how to move the story further. He mentioned that audiences will see more games that will test humanity multiple times.
Neither Netflix nor the producers of Squid have officially announced a release date for the second season. However, if Hwang is to be believed, the next Squid Game season will take place in late 2023. We will announce the confirmed release date as soon as the official information becomes available.
Squid Game Season 2: Trailers
At the time of writing, Netflix has only released a short trailer for the second season of Squid Game. The streaming company posted a surprise on June 12, 2022, mentioning “Red light … GREEN LIGHT!” plays from the TV show. The tweet further confirms that “Squid is officially back for Season 2!”

Netflix has yet to release any official Squid Season 2 trailer. We’ll update this article with the first teaser trailer and other teasers as to when and when Netflix released them.
There was a message from writer, director, producer, and creator of Squid, Hwang Dong-hyuk, following the first teaser trailer. In another tweet, Hwang thanked fans and teased some interesting plot points and returning characters for Season 2. So let’s check out everything we know about the second season of Netflix’s biggest hit, Squid.
Squid Season 2: Cast Members
Hwang made it clear in his Twitter post (attached below) that Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) is returning for Season 2 of Squid. The audience loved his performance in season 1 and it would be exciting to see what the character does next.

We know so far that he won the game, but instead of enjoying a cash prize of 45 billion yen (~ $ 35 million), he spent his days thinking about the atrocities that had happened on the hidden island. Gi-hun is an exciting character who escaped poverty, but his morals do not allow him to live in peace. So it would be exciting to see Jung-jae play a good-natured hero again. You can check out the original Twitter post from director Hwang here.

In addition, Hwang suggested the return of Front Man (Lee Byung-hun) , the former cop who now oversees the game and leads the masked men in a cult-like group. In the first season, the protagonist shot his brother Hwang Jun-ho (Wi Ha-joon) , a policeman who sneaks into the island where the matches take place. However, the show has never confirmed his death, and fans expect to see Ha-joon in the role again.

With that, it would be interesting to see if Front Man shot his brother on purpose so as not to kill him. So the mystery surrounding these siblings, along with the story of how a cop became Front Man, is what season two might discover.
In addition, the handsome man with the game of ddakji in his bag (played by Gong Yoo ) returns in the second season. The last time we saw this character playing the game of ddakji in the train station was when Gi-hun spotted him from the other side. This means that he is still working with the dangerous organization and we will see more of him soon.
Headmaster Hwang also teased ” Cheol-su ” and mentioned him as Young-hee’s boyfriend . Young-hee is a killer robot doll from the Squid Game pilot in Red Light Green Light. Are there any more killer robots this season? Well, it looks like it, but only time will tell.
Squid Game Season 2: Details of the plot
The Squid Game Season 1 Finale ended with a cliff. We saw the main character Seong Gi-hun not boarding the plane when we realized the game was still active and the people behind it keeping an eye on him. It only makes sense that the story of season 2 will follow Gi-hun as the main character.
However, we have no idea what to expect from the plot. Writer and director Hwang Dong-hyuk mentioned that it took him 12 years to prepare the final script for the first season and that he had no intention of continuing the story. That’s why a surprise awaits us.
The only clue we have at the moment is that someone else is continuing the game after Oh Il-nam (player 001) dies. Hwang mentioned in an interview with The Times that he would like to discover the origins of Front Man in the second season of Squid . Now that it’s confirmed he’s making his return in season two, audiences can expect the ex-cop to oversee the deadly game. Plus, who’s behind all of this and what steps Gi-hun can take to stop them is going to be exciting to watch.
At the end of the day, one thing is for sure, we can expect another round of The Squid Game in Season 2. This means that in each game we will see a different group of people fighting for their lives (probably new ones this time). We can expect to see more kills, betrayals and a dark mystery next season.
