The Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic have just been unveiled at the Samsung Unpacked event – and, aside from the name, there’s quite a lot that separates the two devices.

As anyone who just watched the Samsung Unpacked event has found out, the company seems to be headed in a slightly different direction with its latest round of smartwatches. Unlike last year, Samsung has decided to release two versions of its latest Galaxy Watch simultaneously.

For potential users, this is great because it means you can side with the one that best suits your tastes. However, it does mean that some previous research is necessary to make sure you choose the Galaxy Watch that’s right for you. To help you in this endeavor, we’ve highlighted four key differences that set the Galaxy Watch 4 apart from the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic.

The Galaxy Watch 4 is an “active” watch

Although there is no word “active” in the name, the Galaxy Watch 4 is every inch the successor to the Galaxy Watch Active 2. To start with, the Watch 4 includes a sweat-resistant watch strap that, like anyone who uses a wearable device, to keep track of their fitness, knows that this is a simple but necessary function.

The Watch 4 is also the smaller and less of a hassle option of the two (more details below), meaning it’s less prone to irritation when worn while running. Still, if you decide to get the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, you won’t be left out in the cold – both devices include a new body composition analysis tool that takes into account BMI, fat, muscle mass and body water.

The rotating bezel returns only on the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic

One of the most distinctive features of Samsung’s smartwatch series is the ingenious swivel bezel that acts as an innovative way to interact with menus and applications. If you’re going back to Samsung’s newest line of wearables with the intention of enjoying this familiar design, I’m afraid you’ll want to ignore the standard Galaxy Watch 4 altogether.

The Galaxy Watch 4 Classic is the only device of the two that retains the aforementioned rotating bezel. Admittedly, the Watch 4 has a digital swivel bezel, but whether it’s as satisfying as a physical swivel system remains to be seen.

The Galaxy Watch 4 Classic is slightly larger

As mentioned before, the Galaxy Watch 4 has kept fitness tracking at the center of its design, which is why it comes in smaller sizes of 40mm and 44mm. The Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, on the other hand, is all about flaunting its traditional design, taking up more space on your wrist with 42mm and 46mm options.

Whether smaller or larger is an advantage depends entirely on the use case. If you prefer a larger screen that’s easier to read, the 4 Classic will probably suit you; people with smaller wrists may feel more at home with the standard Galaxy Watch 4.

Galaxy Watch 4 is cheaper

For some people, a key factor in choosing a Galaxy Watch will be their budget. If price is a key concern, the Galaxy Watch 4 wins easily, with an entry-level price tag of £ 249.

Plumping for the Galaxy Watch 4 Classic will take a heavy toll on your wallet, with a asking price of £ 349 – £ 100 more than the original Watch 4.
